The Silver American Eagle coin program is the official silver bullion program of the United States. First struck in 1986, the Silver Eagles are subject to high demand each year. For the 35th anniversary of the program this year, the US Mint now implements a redesigned reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. This redesign incorporates brand new security features inside the design, making it far more secure than ever before. One of the new security features is an anti-counterfeit reeded edge that appears as a "gap" variation in the edge. The new reverse for both the Gold and Silver Eagles proudly shows off the American Bald Eagle in two different depictions. On the Silver Eagle, you will see a flying American Eagle. Additionally, the obverse was modified to more closely align with the original Walking Liberty design even more.

The obverse portrays the classic Adolph A Weinman image known as “Walking Liberty.” This illustration was first used for the silver half-dollar from 1916-1947 and was originally updated for the coin program. Now, the obverse is a closer rendition of the original that Weinman created. Updates include Weinman's initials, the year of mintage font, and restoring the original details for Liberty's eye, bonnet, flag, and the sun's rays. Lady Liberty walks towards the setting sun with oak and laurel branches in her left arm, outstretching her right arm to the horizon. She also has the American flag draped over her shoulders.

The new reverse design shows a bald eagle flying while carrying an oak branch, perhaps back to its nest or to create a new nest. The eagle is surrounded by inscriptions including the country, weight, purity, denomination, and the US motto “E Pluribus Unum”.
