The Silver American Eagle coin program is the official silver bullion program of the United States. First struck in 1986, the Silver Eagles are subject to high demand each year. For the 35th anniversary of the program this year, the US Mint now implements a redesigned reverse for the American Gold and Silver Eagles. This redesign incorporates brand new security features inside the design, making it far more secure than ever before. Among the security features added to the coin is the new anti-counterfeit reeded edge, which appears as a "gap" variation on the edge. The new reverse for both the Gold and Silver Eagles proudly shows off the American Bald Eagle in two different depictions. On the Silver Eagle, you will see a flying American Eagle on the reverse. The obverse is also slightly modified to appear more like the original "Walking Liberty" design used on the silver half-dollar from 1916-1947.

The obverse portrays the classic Adolph A Weinman image known as “Walking Liberty,” which has been restored for the Type 2 Silver Eagle coins. Elements that have returned include Weinman's initials, the font used for the year of mintage, and certain artistic details for Liberty's eye, bonnet, flag, and the solar rays. Lady Liberty walks towards the setting sun with oak and laurel branches in her left arm, outstretching her right arm to the horizon. She also has the American flag draped over her shoulders.

The new reverse design shows a bald eagle flying while carrying an oak branch, perhaps back to its nest. The eagle is surrounded by inscriptions including the country, weight, purity, denomination, and the US motto “E Pluribus Unum”.
